He said that he often had to act as the “middle man” because Obata and Ohba were so shy and their creative processes were so different.Īside from editing, he had to be the glue that held this team together, making him much more than an editor. During the interview Yoshida commented on how his job was a lot more than editing. Yoshida knew that Obata would be perfect to work with Ohba because of his gothic art style, which had won Obata awards at the young age of sixteen (bleeding cool). The “Dream Team,” as Obata and Ohba are usually called, were actually brought together by their editor. The fact that these two can bounce ideas off each other and collaborate in such a way really seems to contribute to the success of their series.Īt the 2014 New York Comic Con, Yoshida and his editing team were interviewed during their panel. The two have certainly created a well-balanced relationship that involves the editing skills of others, as well as the use of each other.
These changes also add to edits in Ohba’s writing of the story. Obama also works as an editor by taking Ohba’s character ideas and “editing” them by adding quirks, parts of personalities, expression and style. He does not infringe upon Obata’s rights as an antics, nor does he stifle his creativity even though he certainly could due to the fact that Death Note is technically his story. He lets him create his basic drawings from the story descriptions and makes few changes.

It is clear that as the image editor, so to speak, Ohba lets Obata have free range on his creativity. Ohba “edits” the illustrators drawing and the two collaborate on the changes that need to be made (comicbookresources). It is easy to see how the two could both take on the role of editor in this situation. “Of course the initial written design of a character by Ohba influenced how Obata brought them to life in a drawing, but the details, quirks, traits that Obata put into the drawings of characters then influenced how Ohba went on to write them and their behavior in the manga” (deathnotenews). The two work back and forth in this manner, feeding off each other and essentially becoming editors themselves. Although Ohba may make a few minor changes, they usually stay pretty close to Obata’s original drawings. Obata then submits his work to Ohba for final inspection.
Instead, Obata reads what Ohba has written and draws his inspiration from there.

When asked how the two work together, Obata informed reporters that Ohba does not tell him how to draw the characters. Together the two have produced many successful anime works together. However, despite the secrecy, Ohba and Obata have become quite a team. Many think that Ohba is actually a pen name for the writer, and there are many theories on who he/she actually is. Not much is known about Ohba, including his/her gender, and the writer’s face has never been seen. One may think that Ohba is hard to work with, due to the secrecy that surrounds the writer. The first relationship that needs to be examined is that of manga-ka (writer) Tsugumi Ohba and illustrator Takeshi Obata. In order to do so, they must avoid being caught by the clever and eccentric detective known only as L. Light and Ryuk set out to use the notebook to murder as many criminals as they can in Japan. After Light uses the notebook for the first time, he releases the owner of this particular Death Note, a Shinigami (God of Death) named Ryuk. If the holder of the notebook wishes to inflict a specific death on an individual, all he has to do is include the details with the name. Doing so will cause an individual to die of a heart attack within seven seconds of their name being written. The inside cover of this notebook features rules on how to cause the death of any individual just by simply writing their name and picturing their face. In the story, a high school senior, Light Yagami, stumbles upon a black notebook called the Death Note.
